Masters of Carpentry: Melding Forest, Skill and Spirit
The exhibition “Masters of Carpentry: Melding Forest, Skill and Spirit” welcomes visitors into the world of the Japanese daiku, or master carpenters – the guardians of the timeless traditions and cultural heritage of Japan’s wood craft.
In Japan, a rich tradition of carpentry and wood craftsmanship has flourished over centuries, nurtured by imperial and sacred architecture, and propelled by the nation’s economic and cultural development. Daiku, the revered masters of Japanese carpentry and woodcutting, have long honored nature, seeking the benevolence of mountain deities in gathering their materials. Central to their ethos is the imperative of sourcing wood in harmony with the forest, advocating for the meticulous selection of materials tailored to each application. Japanese woodworking practice, renowned for its precision, is thus rooted in a profound reverence for nature and environmental balance.
Despite the challenges of mountainous forest terrain and limited natural metal ore resources, Japanese master carpenters have displayed remarkable innovation, pioneering world-class carpentry tools and kigumi, wood joinery techniques characterized by their simplicity and efficiency. This exhibition pays homage to the Japanese carpenters – builders of temples, shrines, and teahouses – showcasing their tools and their indispensable joinery, from the delicate to the robust, inherent in this important cultural architecture.
This JAPAN HOUSE touring exhibition is produced in conjunction with the Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum in Kobe, Japan, and a symbol of the museum’s longevity and commitment to preserving the Japanese daiku culture. Marking its 40th Anniversary in 2024, the museum has continued to collect carpenters’ tools and reintroduce daiku culture which has been in danger of disappearing since the second half of the 20th century. The exhibition will debut at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles before traveling to JAPAN HOUSE locations in London and São Paulo.

The JAPAN HOUSE LA Foundation has been presenting a series of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, generously sponsored by MUFG. The first program in 2025 will dive deeper into the heart of culinary traditions with an exploration of comfort foods that tell stories, spark memories, and connect communities across continents.
Join us for an evening where food becomes a language of cultural expression, as we journey through the soul-warming dishes of Japan, Brazil, and Morocco. This two-part program invites guests to discover the meaning of “comfort food” – those magical dishes that aren’t just meals, but time machines of taste that transport you home with a single bite. Our presenters will share memories and narratives behind each country’s most cherished comfort foods, exploring how these dishes are far more than sustenance – they’re edible memories and cultural touchstones.
The evening begins with vibrant presentations by speakers from Japan, Brazil, and Morocco. Learn the historical background of Brazilian feijoada, how Japanese takoyaki and karaage represent colorful festival nights spent with family, and how Moroccan tagines whisper tales of hospitality and community. Following the talk, guests will be treated to network while indulging in authentic tastes that go far beyond a simple meal – this is a culinary journey that feeds not just the stomach, but the soul.

Under Ninja World Premiere | Screening and Q&A
Ninjas have been sneaking around the world, and they are still active today. Under Ninja opens a curtain on “modern ninja entertainment” that no one has ever seen before!
Join JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles for a special world premiere screening of Under Ninja, the live action adaptation of the popular manga by Kengo Hanazawa. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with its two talented lead actors.
Under Ninja stars Kento Yamazaki, the first Japanese actor to win “The Best from the East Award” at the New York Asian Film Festival in 2024, in the role of the mysterious ninja “Kuro Kumogakure” who is entrusted with a very important “ninja task”. Yamazaki takes on the challenge of a completely new “ninja action” film of the likes that no one has ever seen before!
Ayaka Noguchi, a high school girl who gets caught up in a battle between ninjas, is played by Minami Hamabe, who has become a renowned actress in Japan and beyond through her continuous appearances in high-profile films such as Godzilla Minus One.
Witness ninjas with a variety of skills and other fascinating characters taking over the movie screen in 2025!

We invite visitors to experience the taste of Japanese powdered green tea (matcha) and the beauty of the Japanese tea ceremony with experts from the Urasenke school, which is known for its distinctive sense of style and presentation. These gatherings take place around our exhibition’s meticulous replica of the historic Sa-an teahouse, originally designed by 16th-century tea master Sen no Rikyu. Each session includes a live demonstration, and tastings of tea and sweets – a perfect way to begin 2025 with mindfulness and cultural enrichment.
